Bob Ferguson has been a professional musician from over 30 years. Currently he is Principal Trombone with the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra and Second Trombone with the Orchestra of the National Ballet of Canada.
I was a professional musician during the 1970s. Now, as I make these portraits of my former colleagues, many, many things go through my mind.
For instance, while I was working with Bob on this image, I was thinking about the thousands of solitary hours he has invested in perfecting and maintaining his mastery of the instrument.
I also thought about the theatricality of performing. And about the great clown Grock ( http://www.osborne-conant.org/Grock.htm ) who was the impetus for Luciano Berio's Sequenza V for Solo Trombone ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqlUhN7TbAk ) .
Music, as with the other performance arts, is like an iceberg: by far the greater part exists under the surface, out of view.
